TYPOGRAPHY+ BOOK DESIGN

Objective: 
This book is my typographic interpretation of the movie coherence. Coherence is a science fiction thriller movie about how this girl Emily and a group a friends must deal with strange occurrence when they gather together for a dinner following a comet sighting.
 

Inspirations:

“We’ve learned to try to not spoil an audience member’s personal interpretation of what’s happening. That said, there are two ways to watch the movies. And debated and planned for a year. One way is to simply follow Em from the first shot to the last shot... The other way to watch it is to use the cuts to black as a signal of something much more complicated unfolding. You wouldn’t believe the amount of debate going into those cuts to black, by the way. How many frames, how the rules work, how the audio should ring out. Amazing”, said Director James Ward.

This is a movie that I cannot get over with watching only one time. The way the movie is cut is so unique, that I need to watch several times, and each time I would have a totally different interpretation.

Goal:
The goal for this movie script book is to create a design system using typography, and showcase chaotic parallel world. An experience and interactions with readers as they ip through the book needs to be achieved. Most importantly, I would like to maintain and transfer the amazing experience director James created through his movie coherence onto the book. The goal is to have this book designed as if each reader can have his own interpretations, and each time he opens up the book with new surprises and understanding.

Typography:
Mrs Eaves XL is used for more readability with small size text compared to Garamond. Therefore, it compasses a rigid scientific mood.

Methodology: 

Five-column layout is used for variations as the book develops. Cut off , slicing the paper, and die-cut technique is used to create the atmosphere of parallel world.

Mood: 
Rigid, Scientific, dark, dizzy, Creepy gradually, thoughtful, physical, overwhelmed.
